Born in 1970 in St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, near Quebec city, Yannick Plamondon studied at the Conservatoire in Quebec city, at the Conservatoire in Montreal, and then went to Europe to study with renowned composers. Thanks to his talent and his determination, he has been commissioned to create many pieces. He is one of the very few to make a living from composition, a rare situation in the current world of contemporary music. A winner of CBC/Radio-Canada Competition for young composers in 1999, he was also awarded the prestigious Jules-Léger Prize for his work Autoportrait sur Times Square.
As you’ve seen, Yannick is an intense and committed composer who wants to make a difference. His quest led him to work with other artists to try to find innovative ways of presenting music. His musical style reflects his personality: authentic, sincere, a mix of softness and rage, a man both simple and complex.
The selected excerpts are drawn from two of his best pieces. He invites you, let’s listen!
The SMCQ has been moving in step with the lively rhythms of new music for over forty-five years. With its regular concert season, its Série hommage (Homage Series), an international festival, and a young listener’s programme, the society has served both as a platform for today’s composers and as a window on creative works for everyone.
