Aventa New Music Society is a Victoria-based ensemble with a mission statement of performing and fostering new music in British Columbia and Canada. Aventa New Music Society was founded in 2003 to fill a need in Victoria for a professional ensemble capable of performing a wide range of modern repertoire. The ensemble is under the artistic direction of Bill Linwood and is comprised of approximately fifteen musicians. Members are drawn from the ranks of the Victoria Symphony, the University of Victoria, the University of British Columbia and leading freelance players from Victoria and Vancouver.
Over the last three seasons, Aventa has frequently premiered works from British Columbia, the rest of Canada and abroad. Highlights from the international repertoire include the Canadian premieres of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ De Assumtione Beatae Mariae Virginis and Thomas Adès’ Concerto Conciso with acclaimed Canadian pianist, Louis Lortie, as soloist. Aventa regularly commissions new works from national and international composers. With the assistance of the Canada Council for the Arts and the British Columbia Arts Council, Aventa has recently commissioned works from BC composers Giorgio Magnanensi, Douglas Schmidt and Wolf Edwards. In addition, British composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies has accepted a commission to compose a horn trio for Aventa to be premiered in the autumn of 2008.
