After studying violin and oboe at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec, in Quebec City, Marie-Annick Béliveau switched to singing and worked extensively with Jan Simons. She soon demonstrated a great interest for contemporary music and new forms of music. With Bruce Mather’s precious help, she discovered modern repertoire and established a fruitful contact with young composers; she thus premiered more than twenty vocal works from Quebec composers such as Anthony Rozankovic, André Ristic, André Villeneuve, Sean Ferguson, Fausto Romitelli, Marco Antonio Perez-Ramirez and Laurie Radford. In 1998, she was invited to work with Katherine Ciesinski at the Centre de la Voix de Royaumont in France. She sang under the direction of Lorraine Vaillancourt, Véronique Lacroix and Raffi Armenian; she performed as well with the Tuyo group, the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, the Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal, the McGill Group of Electronic Music Studio, and has been heard on CBC Radio, Radio-Canada and Radio France. She recently recorded André Ristic’s 2001 Jules-Léger Prize winning Catalogue de Bombes Occidentales with the Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal. Her great technical versatility and her experience as an performer without frontiers incited many composers to write original compositions for her, calling for every kind of vocal style. She is one of the main figures of the movie White Brush, Red Wine and Death in a Paris Café directed by Marianne Ackermann and the star singer of the musical The Cosmic Cocktail Show Band.
