Led by artistic director Jennifer Waring, the veteran new music organization Continuum presents concerts featuring a core ensemble of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and percussion, often augmented by electronics, voice and other instruments. The organization has commissioned and premiered close to 150 new works from emerging Canadian and international composers, and from established composers charting new territory. In Canada, Continuum has performed in Banff, Brandon, Kitchener, Montréal, Ottawa, Vancouver and Winnipeg, as well as in its home base of Toronto. Touring twice to Europe it has appeared in Aberdeen, Amsterdam, Ghent, Huddersfield, Leeuwarden, London, and ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The group has recorded two CDs on its own label and was the recording ensemble on a previous Centrediscs release of works by Chris Paul Harman. Interdisciplinary projects have paired music with dance, installation, film, architecture and philosophy. In 2005 Continuum presented l’Oreille Fine, concerts and a symposium featuring philosophers, poets, critics and a psychologist dealing with the subject of contemporary expression in a classical art form. In the 2008-09 season Continuum mounted SHIFT, a festival of Canadian and Dutch music, film and literature, at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam and in Toronto.
