April 2010
Quebec Schools

A collaborative project of the SMCQ, the CMC, and FAMEQ

Take part in a major assembly to take place around Gilles Tremblay! In April, all Québec schools will be invited to take part in “Tremblay Week” as part of the “Grand Jeu / Grande Écoute” project. How? By listening to or playing a work by Gilles Tremblay in class (special arrangements of scores and recordings are available at no charge to all interested teachers). The first edition of this project brought together 13, 900 young people from 83 schools in 12 different regions of Quebec… Undeniably the largest activity to promote composer awareness ever.

All young participants will receive a free copy of an illustrated book about Gilles Tremblay. Hurry — quantities limited!

Tremblay Adapted for Young Musicians

Thanks to the collaboration of the Canadian Music Centre in Quebec (CMC) our provinces school bands will be able to perform a work by Gilles Tremblay as part of the “Grand Jeu” event. In fact, the CMC has commissioned composer Serge Arcuri to create school band arrangements of excerpts from Tremblay’s Vêpres de la Vierge. The auspicious premiere will be given by Harmonie FAMEQ on November 20th, 2009 in Montreal, as part of FAMEQ’s annual conference.

Composing in the Present!

The SMCQ has been moving in step with the lively rhythms of new music for almost fifty years. With its regular concert season, its Série hommage (Homage Series), an international festival, and a young listener’s programme, the society has served both as a platform for today’s composers and as a window on creative works for everyone.
