Acknowledged for its “remarkably beautiful tone,” as well as its “extraordinary technique and musicality,” the New Orford String Quartet came to be in 2009, rising from the ashes of the highly reputed Orford String Quartet (1965-1991). From its first performance onward, the new quartet has met with energetic approval that has assured it a choice place on the cultural scene.
The SMCQ has been moving in step with the lively rhythms of new music for over forty-five years. With its regular concert season, its Série hommage (Homage Series), an international festival, and a young listener’s programme, the society has served both as a platform for today’s composers and as a window on creative works for everyone.
