The results of Shanghai’s major international composers competition are in! The setting: a concert given by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Zhang Yi this past Monday (May 11th) at the city’s Grand Theatre. The results:
These winners were part of a cohort of eight Canadian composers who took part in the competition, each presenting short works commissioned by the SMCQ. Each of the winners will receive a cash award, and Gougeon will be invited to expand his work to 12 minutes to compete in 2010, alongside composers from France and the Netherlands who were selected in 2007 and 2008.

The SMCQ has been moving in step with the lively rhythms of new music for over forty-five years. With its regular concert season, its Série hommage (Homage Series), an international festival, and a young listener’s programme, the society has served both as a platform for today’s composers and as a window on creative works for everyone.
