On March 18th, pianist Louise Bessette joined Walter Boudreau and the SMCQ Ensemble to present a concert of Gilles Tremblay’s works — including his great piano concerto Envoi. The day before the event, nearly 600 children from disadvantaged schools attended the rehearsal of this work through the auspices of the Supporting Montréal Schools program run by the Ministry of Education, Recreation and Sport. They listened intently to Walter Boudreau and the musicians, and some have even responded to a reporter’s questions about their experience with contemporary music.

The SMCQ has been moving in step with the lively rhythms of new music for over forty-five years. With its regular concert season, its Série hommage (Homage Series), an international festival, and a young listener’s programme, the society has served both as a platform for today’s composers and as a window on creative works for everyone.
