Dégonflement (1998)

Jean-François Laporte

ten amplified-balloon players

Dégonflement makes use of a particularly mundane sound generator, the balloon, from which it brings out surprising sounds that are strangely related to those of traditional instruments or electroacoustic material.

Because of its instrumentation, this piece might seem like a festive invitation—of which the balloon is certainly a symbol. The audience, with the musicians placed all around them, is at the heart of a musical activity that may seem ludic by the very nature of the instruments used. However, it is with the same seriousness that applies to classical instrumentation that Jean-François Laporte created it. He strives to bring to the balloon the status of a genuine musical instrument.
