The song depicts the tender and unconditional motherly love toward a wandering son. I have chosen to use sprechsmitte to mimic the colour in a Cantonese operatic recitative. The composition of the piece require both—the piano and the singer—to be codependent, that each part is supporting and is supported by the other throughout the piece. The supporting role explores the negative space (the ambience between the notes) during the listening experience; it may be filled with a luscious chord, or nothing at all.
