soprano, and piano
I was attracted to the thin texture and limited pitch material at the beginning of Claude Vivier’s “Love Songs”. I used this as the basis for developing the musical materials for my composition. The end result is a piece that is quite tonal and sparse in texture, compared to other compositions that I have written. I used a personal theme for incorporating the idea of love and Quebec into the content of this piece. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of spending my summers in Quebec, on the sea near Rimouski, and in the city of Montreal. To incorporate these ideas, I used a poem about the city and the sea by a Canadian poet. While the text is not about love it speaks about the things that I love in Quebec.
