Discover the MNM New Music Lounge

An exhibition of works and sound installations, listening posts, etc., and some terrific video programming.

For the fourth time, the SMCQ will set up its New Music Lounge in the of the Place des Arts, Exhibition Room, which opened in 2011. “Back to the Future” the MNM Festival theme reflects on the music of tomorrow, and the manner whereby yesterday’s composers imagined the music of the future. The Festival and the Lounge will place recent works at the forefront, while reserving a place for visionaries from the past.

The proposed exhibition is the result of a collaboration between UQAM’s École des arts visuels et médiatiques and Le Fresnoy, Studio national des arts contemporains (Lille, France). 5 video works (on monitors and headhones) by Canadian and French artists will be presented:

  • Ce soir on improvise: nouvelle musique au Québec (Di Torre & Gervais, 1974, 56 min.)
  • Commencer par / puisqu’à toute fin correspond (R. Gervais, 1975, 47 min.)
  • Le mode Delian / The Delian Mode (K. Blake, 2009, 25 min.)
  • Mutation of Matter (Franklin & Rivas, 2008, 14 min.)
  • Tact (Le Maguer, 2016, 15 min.)

Underscoring the SMCQ’s 50th anniversary, three listening posts immerse attendees into a sound portrait of the urban / social / cultural / musical environment from which the SMCQ Evolved: the Cinquième salle of the Place des Arts, Expo 67, Centre Pierre-Péladeau (1992), Symphonie du Millénaire (2000), etc.; a slide show revisiting, through images, the major stages of the SMCQ since its foundation.
