The title of this piece, Marées [mah-ray], is the French word for “tides.” The ebb and flow of tidal currents, from their almost imperceptible beginnings to their tumultuous climax, is reflected musically by an elastic treatment of rhythm, register, and density. Marées was commissioned by the CBC as the imposed piece for the 1995 CBC Young Performers Competition.
